What does a respiratory physiotherapist do?
Respiratory physiotherapy focuses on helping you improve how well your lungs work and how comfortably you breathe. Many people aren’t familiar with this area of physiotherapy, so these FAQs explain what to expect from appointments and how treatment typically works. If you’d like to talk through anything in more detail, you’re always welcome to get in touch.
How long is the initial assessment?
An initial assessment usually lasts around 50 minutes. This gives enough time to understand your symptoms, medical history, and goals.
How many sessions will I need?
The number of sessions varies from person to person. After your first assessment, I’ll have a clearer idea of what you may need and can give you an estimated plan. Ultimately, you decide how many sessions you’d like to continue with.
How often will my sessions be?
Most people are reviewed 1–2 weeks after their first appointment. After that, sessions are often spaced out more, depending on your progress and goals. If you’re following an exercise-based programme, weekly sessions may be recommended depending on the package you choose.
What’s the difference between virtual and in‑person appointments?
Face‑to‑face appointment allows for hands‑on assessment and makes it easier to spot subtle changes in breathing or movement. Virtual appointments can still be very effective, but if something is difficult to assess on screen, I may suggest an in‑person visit. For people who experience fatigue, virtual sessions can be a helpful way to conserve energy.
Can you visit me at home?
Home visits can be arranged. If travel is required over a longer distance, an additional travel fee may apply.
